Celebrating grads (and dads!): Where to feed the extended family

Group Dining Options Downtown Olympia

Caps and gowns are a sure sign that summer’s around the corner. It’s not unusual for the whole family to get together and celebrate dads and grads. Don’t stress out about feeding them, downtown Olympia’s got you covered!

Whether you crave fine dining or something casual, hit up these great spots. But with party season rapidly approaching, if your group is over 6 people, it’s a good idea to make reservations in advance to lock-in the day and time that works best.

Basilico Ristorante Italiano
Basilico’s food and wine menus are superb and it also offers one of the best gluten-free menus in town. They’re only open for dinner, Tuesday through Saturday, but it’s a decadent, elegant treat.

Private parties of up to 50 are welcome, just call 360-570-8777 Tuesday through Saturday between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. You can even book the entire restaurant during their Sunday and Monday off-hours.

Budd Bay Café
Nothing says Olympia like waterfront views from Percival Landing. Enjoy the boardwalk from tables indoor and out at Budd Bay Café. Call 360-357-6963 for reservations or to arrange catering. Pros can even handle decorations, flowers, facilities, and equipment rentals. Good to know since graduation and wedding seasons overlap.

Have wiggly little ones? Hit up the Café’s kids menu then take them to the playground adjacent to Harbor House to burn off that extra energy.

Casa Mia
Another surefire catering win comes from Casa Mia. Their comprehensive do-it-yourself menu means manicotti, cannelloni, meatballs, lasagna, and garlic bread for everyone! A local staple since 1952, they’ve mastered the art of Italian delights.

Call 360-352-0440 to book dine-in space at their Olympia location or 360-459-0440 for their Lacey restaurant.

Octapas Cafe
It may not look like it from the outside, but Octapas Cafe has a dining room that can hold 62 diners and a bar that can hold 30. They are happy to accommodate 20 people at one long table plus 10 at another in the main dining room and have event space that seats 40 for meetings and meals.
414 4th Ave E, Olympia, WA 98501 or call (360) 878-9333

Chelsea Farms
Located at 222 Market, the Oyster Bar is family-friendly and even has non-seafood and kids menus. Afterward, explore the other shops for flowers, gelato, and pastries.

Looking for something different?  Why not book dinner at the high roller table or in a vintage bank vault? At Dillinger's, they’ve got you covered. Book a table or seat at the bar online or one of the larger spaces by calling 360-515-0650. The vault seats 10 to 12, while the high roller is for groups of 6 to 8.

They’ll also take general reservations for groups of 7+ or discuss catering your event by phone.

Mercato Ristorante
Located across from the iconic Olympia Farmer’s Market, Mercato Ristorante is upscale casual. They make fresh, homemade Italian food for dine in, catering, or private dining. Reserve rooms for groups from 24 to 85 by calling 360-528-3663.

Catering can also be arranged by phone or emailing the staff at

Dining in at Three Magnets is always fun, but they’ve also got you covered for large-scale events and gatherings. Want to host but not cook? Contact the catering team to arrange a meal to remember. Sample menu items include seafood ceviche, crab cakes, grilled salmon, and so much more.

Or reserve a private room for groups up to 40. They can even run multiple tabs, so mom and dad don’t have to foot the bill entirely or offer special menus and discounted drinks. Contact them online as they don’t check voicemails left on the business phone.

Tipsy Piano Bar
For live music or weekend brunch, Tipsy is the spot. They book reservations through Open Table and feature Pacific Northwest specialties, signature cocktails, and a wide variety of musical guests.

Tipsy is open Tuesday through Sunday and Happy Hour is from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. each night. Ask about delicious vegetarian and gluten-free options as well.

Waterstreet Café
Waterstreet Café can also save the big day. Their lunch, dinner, and Happy Hour menus are easily enjoyed in-house, from a private room, for groups from 10 to 80 people, or by take-out catering.
