19th Annual Drive to Send Kids Back to School with Pride

Volunteers organized by KXXO Mixx 96.1 stand on a street corner downtown Olympia to “catch” school supplies and cash donations — in nets — from pedestrians and folks driving or walking by.

Every August for the past 18 years, volunteers organized by KXXO Mixx 96.1 stand on a street corner downtown Olympia to “catch” school supplies and cash donations — in nets — from pedestrians and folks driving or walking by.

One hundred percent of donations go to The Little Red Schoolhouse project – organized by folks with a mission to send all children back to school with pride.

This year the drive called ‘Radio Day’ is on August 9. Mixx will be on the corner of State and Washington doing a live broadcast asking the community to come by and donate school supplies, backpacks, socks and underwear or cash.

“We have so much fun on Radio Day,” explained Toni Holm, Mixx’s co-owner. “A lot of businesses have been donating every year and many of them collect for weeks in advance and then bring the items down on Radio Day. We’ll love to highlight organizations who take part in this drive,” she said. "We will put them on the air to talk about what they did to help."

As an added incentive, Heritage Bank will match the first $2,500 donated! Olympia Orthopaedics, Evergreen Credit Union, Althauser Rayan Abbarno, and Moerke and Sons Pump & Drilling will match further contributions up to $1,000.

Community members can also make donations online at www.kxxo.com and or send checks made out to Little Red Schoolhouse to: P.O. Box 6302, Olympia, WA 98507.

The team at the Little Red Schoolhouse will then distribute the school supplies, backpacks, and socks and underwear to all Thurston County families in need at Komachin Middle School, 3650 College St. SE, Lacey (IT route #64) from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M on Thursday, August 15. There will also be a resource fair.

Mixx is looking for volunteers! To volunteer for the drive call KXXO at 360-943-9937 or see www.kxxo.com
